Enjoying Retirement in Chiang Mai, Thailand

We visited Chiang Mai in late 2006 to evaluate the potential for retirement living.  We found a relaxed life style with many retired ex-patriates living in and around the city.  We returned home to Michigan and decided to wind down our business,  Great Lakes Roses, get rid of our 35-year accumulation of "stuff" and retire to Chiang Mai.  We arrived in November, 2008.

We're here on one-year retirement visas, but hope to remain for 8 - 10 years.  The people, weather, food and medical care is great and the cost-of-living is low.  There is a vibrant community of English-speaking retirees, creating opportunities for many hobbies and pursuits.

During 2009, we'll explore Chiang Mai, make new friends and focus on learning the Thai language.  Roger's taking lessons at the AUA, five days a week and participating in the Chiang Mai Expatriate Club's Computer Group.  As in Michigan, he's active in a local club of Rotary International.  Nancy's Thai language program at the YMCA is less rigorous than Roger's, just three days a week.  She's reserved time for other important activities like shopping, lunching with friends and getting manicures/pedicures.  Together, we're enjoying the the learning curve of a new life, new country and new friends.
